It was a delight
to host this special Astronomy Night event for Theresa
Wilkes and her enthusiastic students!
Many thanks
to our wonderful Astronomy
and Telescope support - Bill Chiu (Adler Planetarium),
Howard Trudo and Bill Friebus (Naperville Astronomical
Assoc) for making this event truly engaging. Thanks
to Theresa Wilkes for having the inspired vision
of integrating her Hinsdale Middle
School Language Arts class with an
evening of stargazing and astronomy. Not too
many kudos to the weather ...which only gave us about
40 minutes of observing time. Also, I would
like to mention Chuck Bueter and his suggestions for "Home
Plate" Paper Plate Astronomy.
Additional thanks
to the Hinsdale Public Library in particular Jamie
Bukovac /Executive Director and Jo Ann Schusterich/Public
Relations, the Hinsdale Public
Library Foundation - Jan Bomher/President, and the
Village of Hinsdale - Dan Schoenberg and Jim Moran.
We had an
estimated 40 8th-grade students gathered on the Hill
of the Library for this special event. Theresa
Wilkes, their Language Arts teacher, integrated this
Astronomy Night event with her classes study of Transcendentalism-
in particular the writings of Thoreau and Emerson. The
students came to the Hinsdale Library
to observe nature - making careful notes
and drawings, they constructed star maps called planispheres,
and discussed Astronomy. From this information each
student will then develop their own
creative writing.
