Astronomy Nights

     

 

There’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy at an astronomy night event. Weather permitting, telescopes are set up on the south lawn and there are activities, including making your own star-finders, in Memorial Hall.

7:30 — 11:00 p.m. Memorial Hall and the south lawn The Hinsdale Public Library Foundation is hosting two astronomy nights. Weather permitting, telescopes will be set up on the south lawn. Regardless of clear skies, there will be informative presentations indoors in the village board room at 7:30 p.m. All are invited. No registration is required.

Space Solar Power for Earth
Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Jim Plaxco, Adler Planetarium instructor, will discuss the idea of using a system of space-based solar power satellites to meet the growing energy demand resulting from increasing world population and per capita energy consumption. He will also talk about the feasibility of mining the Moon for necessary construction materials. Placxo’s presentation will focus on the ideas of Dr. Peter Glaser (SPS concept), Dr. Gerard O’Neil (space manufacturing) and Dr. David Criswell (lunar solar power).

The Universe in Images
Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Explore the wonders of our galactic neighborhood with Jim Kovac, Jet Propulsion Labs Solar System Ambassador. Kovac will show you images of galaxies, nebulas and stars made possible by the Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra space telescopes. He’ll discuss the remnants of stellar death as well as nurseries where new stars are forming and show the first images that scientists believe is evidence of Dark Matter.
