    HPL Foundation Brings Astronaut
    Ron Grabe to Schools

The Hinsdale Public Library Foundation sponsored visits by astronaut Ron Grabe to Monroe School and Elm School on February 13. Grabe spoke to students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades about his experiences in space. Coupled with a slide show, Grabe wowed the students with his descriptions of retrieving a satellite and conducting experiments on microgravity.

Grabe became an astronaut in 1981 and logged more than 627 hours in space with four missions. His first mission, in 1985,was the maiden voyage of the Atlantis, the second Space Shuttle Department of Defense mission, launched from

Kennedy Space Center. He was also on the Atlantis for its 1989 launch from Kennedy Space Center. The crew successfully deployed the Magellan Venus-exploration spacecraft. Grabe’s third mission was on the Discovery in 1992. Fifty-five major experiments were conducted on microgravity. In 1993 Grabe was on the Endeavour to retrieve the European Retrievable Carrier satellite.
