Before you can checkout a telescope you are asked to register for a two-session instructional class.  In these sessions you will learn about the basic workings of a telescope—how to set it up and use it, including the computerized Intelliscope system.  You’ll find out about star-finders, planispheres and star maps.  You’ll be instructed how to use the different eyepieces and magnification, plus learn some do's and don'ts.  Also, you will find out about some of the Library's new astronomy software, maps, and books that will help you in planning for a productive and enjoyable evening of observing.  Each session will allow for you to have plenty of time to practice and ask questions so you will feel comfortable using the telescope when you check it out.
You must register for a Session A and a Session B; sessions you select do not have to be consecutive.  The classes begin in the Memorial Building lobby and then move outside to the south lawn.  Sessions run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  Maximum nine students per session.
